Joey Bada$$ and The Return of the Golden Era

Our taste in music has a direct correlation to the environment we grew up in. To this day I can be anywhere and hear a track from Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On album and immediately flashback to Saturday nights singing and dancing with my siblings as my Dad blasted it through the house. So it only makes sense that the same thing would happen to the 90s babies, flashbacks to the Golden Era of Hip Hop though instead.  Y’all know what I am referring to, HOV (Jay-Z), Nasty Nas, and the G.O.A.T. Tupac Amaru Shakur if the parents were Hip Hop heads. As 90s babies mature and take the reins of Hip Hop for this reason it is also natural that we start to see the golden era of rap influencing today’s scene. With this let me introduce you to Joey Bada$$, one of the kids welcoming us back to the Golden Era.

Joey Bada$$ is a 17 yr old BK native sending waves throughout the Rap world at the moment. You can see without a shadow of a doubt he is a student of the game. Anybody can scream out Hov’s “I’m a hustler baby I just thought you should know” lyrics, but it takes a deep knowledge of the game to pay homage to the gods of Hip Hop like Madlib and MF Doom. True legends in the game that never sought out a commercial audience so most people have no idea who they are. Most of y’all probably even had a confused look on your face. No worries it happens to the best of us. To go beyond the surface and study those underappreciated greats takes dedication and Joey has proven himself to have it. This in addition to his fusion of a gritty boom bap Hip Hop sound along with lyrics that reflect the life of a young black man grinding through life is something that a lot of folks are grabbing ahold of. Enough of me rapping to y’all though, check the kid out let me know what you think.
